Once in Silence

I never thought I would be enough, a little girl away from home for the first time. All cropped dark hair and big eyes and not a clue. I couldn't flirt. I was lost in your eyes, in your mass of dark hair, in porcelain skin and red lips. In teeth that bit my skin and left a ripe strawberry mark for weeks, branding me. That should have warned me from the start. I have loved you and hated you for being out of my reach. In long winter months I wrote in black ink by candlelight in a tarten-bound journal, cream lined paper with gold edging. I quoted song lyrics and poems. I wept tears onto it and smudged the ink across the paper. I pressed so firmly into the flesh of the book with the nib of my pen that I almost broke it, my lips pinched together in a hard, angry line. I said nothing then and say little now, waiting for the day when you tell me that it is too much.
